The Domain Registry of America, sometimes calling themselves the Domain Renewal Group are sending out perfectly legal letters that bear a striking resemblance to an invoice. They are quite legally saying that you should renew your domain name, but with them. These letters have all of the correct details (obtained elsewhere, normally from something that we call Whois) and look very official and proper.

Our advice is NOT TO renew your domain with them but to renew your domain with your normal company, whoever that may be.

Some would call it a scam, we prefer not to comment but to say that our advice is DON’T!

If you have sent a cheque, then stop it, if you have paid by card get on to your card company.
